When you do, you can adjust the difficulty to your liking. It's the same thing, but you will really see the challenges and may enjoy that. After you've played through Diablo 2 on Normal, if you enjoyed it, I would suggest keep playing and go through Nightmare and then again through Hell. When it comes to a first-time experience, I think you will enjoy D2 better. But you are coming to play for the first time. Almost everyone on reddit (including me) has a perspective that comes with years of experience playing Diablo. I won't get in to other differences because I could write paragraphs about it. But now they are very cumbersome to me in comparison to more modern games. Mostly quality-of-life things that I didn't care about back in the early 2000's. To me, D2 is very dated with a lot of game mechanics. So nobody can truly tell you which is better for YOU. And it really comes down to preference when it comes time for you to decide which game you want to KEEP playing after you've played through the story. However, I'm actually more of a D3 fan now. I was really pumped for D3 when it came out, but I was expecting another D2 experience and I didn't get it, so I was a bit disappointed. If you were to ask on the D3 reddit, it would be the other way. So the replies are going to be more in favor of D2. Well, to be fair, this reddit is mainly a D2 reddit.

I mean do what you want, but my suggestion would be to pick up D3 and then D2. Of course you can actually acquire gear after numerous hours of gameplay that assist you to go from L1- L70 in 20-30 minutes. If you die, you lose everything except the stash. Lately I play about every other season (only because I play a lot of ARK). I have probably put more hours into D3 than both D1 and D2 combined. D2 built itself on 'rushing': having higher level players help you through the game so you can get better stuff early on. I have a brother who insists on playing it obsessively and he says D3 is trash. Even the remastered version was lackluster IMO. However, I'm not sure how all these people keep going back to the game.
